Here are my personal lists of favorite local scanner frequencies to monitor; most are listed because they have the highest amount of radio traffic, but a few are here because they are the most interesting when those occasions occur that call them into use, such as disasters and special events.

You will note that the Trunked radio channels in use by the Albuquerque Police, Fire, and Public Works Departments, as well as those of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, are not included here. This is for two reasons:

  • 1) While trunking scanners are finally easy to find and buy, they are still not the most commonly used type, and listening to digital trunked channels with data bursts without a scanner designed for that is a quick way to get a migrane headache.
And
  • 2) if you do own a trunking scanner, you will group all the trunked channels into their own banks, anyway. For a list of the Trunked communications in use locally, go to the Trunked Freqs Page. Trunked comms for agencies that use analog systems are listed here because they can be monitored decently by standard scanners, especially if the delay feature is disabled for those channels.

The frequencies are arranged in banks of 10, since this is the most common scanner format, and the banks are segregated by locality, since I have found this is more useful than trying to sort them by agency - a local fire, for instance, will have the local police and fire and medical agencies involved, not just the Fire Department. So here are my selected "hotlists", to use as a guidline for plugging into your own scanner:

10 409.9500 KAFB Analog Trunked
Note: these channels are trunked (Analog Motorola APCO-25 System), so you will hear a variety of users on any given channel, and comms skipping from channel to channel, if your scanner does not track trunked comms. Turn the "delay" feature off on these channels when monitoring this bank without a trunking scanner, for best results. Also, one channel will be used as a data-only control channel; it will sound like a continual buzz, and the channel will switch every 24 hours (sometimes more often), so you must go in daily and lock-out the data channel, and unlock the previous day's data channel, to keep from missing comms. Also note that the KAFB Security Forces Channel (listed in Bank 2) is not trunked.
